Exploring Video Art Through VHS and Analog Glitch

and

Workshop by Guillaume Vallée, Rob Feulner and Ganesh Baron Aloir

January 11th and 12th, 2025

@ Eastern Bloc (480-55 de Louvain O.)

𝗗𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

This workshop offers an introduction to analog electronics, focusing on glitch techniques, the tools to create them, and the many disciplines associated with this field (video, performance, and hybridization). Led by Guillaume Vallée, Rob Feulner, and Ganesh Baron Aloir, the workshop will provide an introduction to hybrid art forms and ways to integrate analog glitch into film and audiovisual performance. Participants will explore creative processes using found footage, VCRs, VHS players, analog video mixers, and circuit-bent machines.

The workshop will showcase concrete applications in the arts and explore the history of video art associated with analog video and glitches. The goal is to uncover the full potential of analog recording, playback, and broadcasting technologies across various artistic, cultural, and cinematic fields.

This workshop will be in French (FR) and English (EN).

COURSE OUTLINE

DAY 1 : Introduction

  • Overview of video glitch techniques;

  • Theoretical presentation with examples specific to the discipline;

  • Overview of approaches to analog video glitch techniques;

  • Detailed explanation of tools used in the process (video feedback, VHS manipulation, circuit bending, video synthesis, video mixers, and digitization processes);

  • Demonstrations and hands-on experiments guided by the instructors;

  • Free exploration of tools, with participants recording their creations on VHS tapes.

DAY 2 : Building Your Own Dirty Mixer

  • Presentation on intermediality (hybridity between film/analog video, VHS aesthetics, and glitches);

  • Discussion: Why use VHS aesthetics? Reflecting on its relevance and conceptualization;

  • Building a dirty mixer: a video mixer that generates unsynchronized signals, blending two images simultaneously like a corrupted TV signal;

  • Technical demonstrations and personalized guidance for individual projects;

  • Group debrief and discussions on lessons learned.

FACILITATORS' BIOGRAPHIES:

Guillaume Vallée

An experimental filmmaker and video artist, Guillaume Vallée holds a degree in animation cinema from Concordia University and an MFA in Studio Arts – Film Production. Working with film (Super 8, 16mm, 35mm), analog video (VHS, Hi8), and stereoscopic video (red/cyan anaglyph), he explores the materiality of these mediums. His practice combines experimentation, formal discoveries, and a connection between content and medium. Guillaume has participated in numerous artist residencies, and his work is distributed and exhibited internationally.

Rob Feulner

A video artist based in Montreal, Rob Feulner manipulates VCRs, circuit-bent equipment, and tape heads to create video glitches that confront modern political discomfort. His works have been showcased at renowned institutions and festivals, and he runs the label Bleu Nuit Video, curating marginalized artists through DVD and VHS releases.

Ganesh Baron Aloir

Co-founder of Studio TRANSVERSAL and technology director, Ganesh Baron Aloir merges interactive design, programming, and digital art. He has worked with major organizations such as Cirque du Soleil, the SAT, and Centre Phi. A winner of the NUMIX prize for his installation CiÖ, Ganesh focuses on innovation at the intersection of art and technology.
