Steve Bates [CA]
Steve Bates is an artist and musician living in Montreal. His background exploring the noisier side of music and radio art eventually lead him to work on installation projects, both gallery and publicly sited. The sonic provides the starting point for Bates’ projects, which either evoke communication networks and systems, or provide expressions of spatial and temporal experience. Bates frequently uses site-specific sound material in an attempt to uncover place and to explore how the sonic affects our experience of site. Bates holds an MFA from Concordia University where he was awarded the inaugural Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. Current projects include an ongoing collaboration with Douglas Moffat as Field Sound; Okta, a permanent multi-channel outdoor sound installation commissioned by the City of Toronto; Lanterner, a music duo with Marc-Alexandre Reinhardt; and numerous solo exhibitions. Bates continues to release music, both solo and collaboratively. His work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States and Europe.
