"Murmurate" is an audio-visual composition performed through the audience's smartphones.
Participants simply connect to a specially designed web page, which enables the performers to use their phone as a loudspeaker within the performance. This system allows for each phone to be controlled individually and for each audience member to hold their own distinctive part of the composition. Up to 200 people can connect simultaneously, and the overlapping mass of tiny speakers enables listeners to gain a unique spatial perspective on their shared environment.
Each phone also becomes a visual medium, screens flashing from white to black as sound is played. Coupled with the audio, this creates a constantly shifting flickering of light and sound throughout the performance space.
This work builds upon the Fields system which Sébastien Piquemal and Tim Shaw have been implementing since early 2014. It has capabilities of network communication and sound diffusion, which are intergal to this type of performance. Fields is an open-source program and benefits from a wealth of international performances at Cafe OTO, Piksel Festival, FACT Liverpool, Stereolux and NK Projekt.
