Towards a Bright Future or Distorted Present: Smokescreen Ethics of the Military-Industrial-Academic Complex
24 May 2014, 16:00 - 18:00
The apparatus connecting the military, industry, and academia has been at the core of technological advancements since before the Second World War.
From early radio – then computer – hardware, to weaponry, the Internet, and wearable tech, the utopia of war has long been contained and abstracted within the lab through research funded by big industry.
Alejo Duque – expert on tactical media and socio-activist implementations of radio, Valérie Lamontagne – intelligent textile researcher and designer, and Dominic Gagnon – film and web documentarian, in a discussion moderated by Alexandre Castonguay – artist and professor at Université du Québec à Montréal, will explore how science fiction may have impacted the course, over the past several decades, of the narrow, often covert, links between academic research, the scientific community, technology, the military, and the corporate sector.
