- Martin Howse
Martin Howse presents Substrate, a performance that includes recovery equipment and software systems, as well as electrochemical material.
Material is both evidence and self-obscuring; a literal drama of sheer light (waves) and absolute darkness (our substrate) exacerbated by the excitation of substance and its subsequent bodily detection. The performer is cast as a volatile detective, with an audible forensics probing a tabletop micro-material-theatre of earth. Heavily improvised, playing with the collapse of massed, barely functional salvaged equipment and software systems made manifest in sound, voice and light, Howse’s interdisciplinary work focuses on coding manifestations in the field of “psycho-geophysics”. Through the construction of experimental performances, workshops, art materials and texts, Howse explores the links between substance and protocol, addressing (universal) questions of visibility and invisibility (in the world).
This performance is co-curated with Eric Mattson.
