In computer science, a register is a construction of electronic switches, transistors, that allows for the storage and transport of data. A shift register is a construction of registers strung end to end in such a way that data is shifted from one to the next on a master clock pulse.
By mixing the last register’s output to the input of the first, data can be recirculated indefinitely, acting as an echo chamber for data.
Imminent Shift explores the musical properties of these resonant electronic circuits, called Linear Feedback Shift Registers, translating the most basic elements of computer circuitry into an expressive landscape of light and sound. Rather than giving voice and presence to data, this project explores the nature of the mechanics through which that data is voiced.
