"Robotic Trolley" is a remote-controlled motorized shopping cart with a robotic arm capable of grabbing products off of store shelves. Equipped with numerous cameras and operated by a neural network from an off-site control station, the robot goes shopping during performative events. With both a playful and darker side, "Robotic Trolley" quickly embodies a dystopian vision of the machine, calling forth received ideas we have of the machine as replacement for man as well as technological fantasies relating to telepresence and innovation gone askew. This project gains inspiration, in part, from the work "Supermarket Lady, 1969" by Duane Hanson and, in many ways, is in continuity with the tradition of contemporary portraiture, depicting the human condition, which, here, is re-actualized in an era of total technological mediation of all aspects of the human experience.
