Ismail Negm's background is in behavioral neuroscience and pure mathematics, with a particular interest in logic. He is a programmer by profession. He began building and performing with modular synthesizers in 2014, and has since presented work at several venues in Montreal including the SAT, Oboro, and the ModularMondays sessions presented at Eastern Bloc.
Ismail Negm's approach to composition and improvisation centers around three points: creating familiarity - and hence anticipation - through coherence over repetition; capturing the listener with sound objects on the uncanny border between the natural and the synthetic; and insisting on narrative as the purpose of form. The instrument that best expresses his musical intention is the modular synthesizer, which he performs with regularly.
