Eastern Bloc and Media@McGill invite artist or artist collectives to apply for a 4-week production residency in the Eastern Bloc Lab! The theme of the residence is: Media, Art and Politics.

The Eastern Bloc + Media@McGill Residency is an opportunity for artists and audiences to critically engage in the artistic process, with a focus on DIY and open source culture as well as the political discourse surrounding contemporary digital culture, with a special consideration for pedagogy and technological democratization. No need to be a University McGill student to apply.

Eastern Bloc Lab is a site of convergence for emerging and established artists, professionals, students, technicians, theorists and curators. It is a space for experimenting, learning and creating – a place to further develop systems-based, networked, generative and hybrid practices through an artist-led discourse.

Disciplines allowed // Interactive installation, Performance, Net art, Bio art, Audio/video Installation, A/V Performance, Sound performance, Public intervention.

Preference will be given to applications/projects which addresses the following points:

  • Follows a process of experimentation, exploration, risk-taking
  • Uses the lab’s equipment and tools (see list attached)
  • Presents critical, engaged content
  • Engages with the theme Media, Art and Politics
  • Pushes the material framework and conceptual parameters of the mediums and technologies used
  • Makes use of multiple platforms, systems, network(s), and/or open source technology
  • Explores current trends in digital culture
  • Encourages a reflection on the digital language
  • Seeks to deconstruct or question the normative production and exhibition structures in digital art

The selected artist or artist collective will benefit from:

  • A 4-week production residency (February 5th - March 5th), followed by a public presentation and an artist talk in the gallery space (date to be confirmed).
  • Free access to the research and production lab
  • Technical support during the four weeks of production
  • Access to equipment and tools in the lab
  • A small storage space for personal materials and equipment
  • 10 hours of technical assistance for installation and dismantle of work for public presentation
  • Documentation of residency
  • A total fee of $1500 for the residency (including production, presentation and talk)

Artists must submit the following:

  • Artistic statement (max 250 words)
  • Detailed description of the project including technical requirements (max 500 words)
  • Short statement explaining how the project will benefit from the Lab
  • Bio and up-to-date CV of all collaborators
  • Support material of current or past works (max. 10 images and/or 2 audio/video excerpts, no more than 20 MB)

All completed submissions must be sent by email with documents attached to no later than December 22nd, 2017.
