Call for Residency 2019

Eastern Bloc invite artist or artist collectives to apply for a production residency in the Eastern Bloc Lab!

Eastern Bloc Residency Program is an opportunity for artists and audiences to critically engage in the artistic process, with a focus on DIY and open source culture as well as the political discourse surrounding contemporary digital culture, with a special consideration for pedagogy and technological democratization.

Eastern Bloc Lab is a site of convergence for emerging and established artists, professionals, students, technicians, theorists and curators. It is a space for experimenting, learning and creating – a place to further develop systems-based, networked, generative and hybrid practices through an artist-led discourse.

Disciplines allowed :

  • Interactive installation
  • Performance
  • Net art
  • Bio art
  • Audio/video Installation
  • A/V Performance
  • Sound performance
  • Public intervention

Preference will be given to applications/projects which addresses the following points:

  • Follows a process of experimentation, exploration, risk-taking
  • Uses the lab’s equipment and tools (see list attached)
  • Presents critical, engaged content
  • Pushes the material framework and conceptual parameters of the mediums and technologies used
  • Makes use of multiple platforms, systems, network(s), and/or open source technology
  • Explores current trends in digital culture
  • Encourages a reflection on the digital language
  • Seeks to deconstruct or question the normative production and exhibition structures in digital art

The selected artist or artist collective will benefit from:

  • 3 week production residency (May 2-22, 2019) + technical assistance
  • 1 week exhibition a public presentation and an artist talk in the gallery space during the vernissage (23 – 29 Mai 2019)
  • Photographic documentation of the exhibition
  • Technical assistance for installation and dismantle of work (10 heures)
  • Free access to the research and production lab
  • Access to equipment and tools in the lab
  • Access to a small storage space
  • 1 500 $ in honorarium  (including production, exhibition public presentation and talk)

Please include the following document in the  PDF file (max 20 MB)

  • Application form (see attached)
  • Artistic statement (max 250 words)
  • Curriculum Vitae (up to date) and Bio (max 250 words) - for all the collaborators
  • Detailed description of the project or workshop including technical requirements (500 words max)
  • Explain why you want to present this project at EB (250 words max)  
  • Current or previous works: support material (max. 10 images and/or links to 2-5 audio/video excerpts, no more than 15 MB)

  • Applicants can send multiple applications
  • Applicants will be paid based on the standard rates suggested in the CQAM fee grid
  • All applicants receive a confirmation of receipt for your application(s)
  • Selected participants will be contacted in April 2019
  • The submission will not be considered if the submission guidelines are not respected or send after March 15, 2019 at Midnight
